Bevel gears are used for transmission between intersecting shafts. Compared with cylindrical gears, it can change the transmission direction. Typical applications include drive axle in automobile, tractor and coal mining machinery.

The design, manufacture and installation of straight and helical teeth bevel gears are relatively simple. But they are noisy, and are used for low-speed transmission (<5m/s). The transmission power of straight teeth bevel gears can reach 400 kW and the peripheral speed over 5 m/s. The transmission of helical bevel gears runs smoothly and the load-bearing capacity of the gears is relatively higher than straight teeth bevel gear. However helical teeth bevel gears are difficult to manufacture. Thus their applications are rather limited.

Curved bevel gears have characteristics of smooth transmission, low noise and heavy-load carrying capacity. They are widely used in high-speed and heavy-duty conditions. Spiral teeth are typical type of curved bevel gear teeth. The transmission power of curve-tooth bevel gear can reach 4000 kW, and the circumferential speed can reach more than 40 m/s.
